Today’s tutorial may seem a little off-topic at first glance. Security and making money online? How are they related you may be asking yourself.
Maybe you do understand the relationship but are not aware of the danger you are in if you are not securing yourself at every step of the way of your online marketing business.
In any case, I am here to tell you that not only are they related, having a good security plan and action list in place and in use for your entire online marketing business is vital.
You cannot afford to lose a lot of money to criminals, and today the bad guys are more clever than ever in coming up with ways to take your money.
The days of the Nigerian scams may be behind us, but there are new and more insidious ways that such people are operating today where you may not even realize you are being hacked until it is too late.
Because I feel strongly that this site should provide everything that will help your programs, I thought it appropriate that this subject be covered.
So have a look, see what may pertain to your security steps, and take what you learn here and implement it in your own programs. This is a lively subject I think, so I would expect that over time we will get some good feedback a well…
Let’s get started!
WHY WORRY ABOUT EMAIL ACCOUNT SECURITY
I have been fortunate enough to witness and be part of the advent of email use and the subsequent proliferation over the years and watched as it has evolved from a novelty to where it is at today.
Many people will try to convince you that email is “old school” and not as relevant today as it once was, so do not be too concerned about it in your online marketing business.
I say just the opposite from my own experience…Today it is more important than ever. Email is still the most effective way to sell if it is used properly.
Because so much business is conducted through emails and in light of the major breaches that huge companies like Target, Sony, and others have experienced, you need to be concerned about the security of your email accounts!
The Past – When I first started using emails, it was for military business, and we had special networks and systems in place where we were protected (we thought) from outside viewers…If I think about the “security” we had back then, it really was not that secure in today’s terms…
The Present – Today we have moved beyond the spam period that mushroomed as emails started to gain in popularity and that was a good move. The bad guys have had to get more sophisticated in their attempts to bilk you…
The Future – As we move to more visual and virtual reality and live digital communication, it is likely that emails will have less of an influence on the way marketing is done, but there will be some role still for emails…
The bottom line is that we know there are lots of people that are trying to get your personal information and your business information. Information is power.
Not only that, they can also use that information to steal from you. Your bank account, your credit card, or in some cases it may be a physical theft that started with breaching your email account.
We need to see what we are doing and what protective steps that need to be taken today to make sure that we have the maximum level of protection against hackers…
Below I have laid out some steps for you to look through and assess where you are with your security in regards to each point…
HOW YOU CAN TAKE STEPS NOW TO PROTECT YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNT
Here are some basic steps and areas to consider and tasks for each as you begin to look at the security you have in place and what additional things you may need to address:
Step #1 – Your Account Details
Check to make sure that your birthday is inaccurate,
Set up a two-step authorization,
Make sure your account is not shared publicly,
If you have a profile associated with the account, it is not shared publicly,
If there is a name within the account name, make sure that the name is not used to gain access to the account,
Set the privacy level to “Private,”
Make sure that your birthday, hometown, and residence address are not public,
Have all important information regarding the account saved in a private place or on paper offline,
Step #2 – Password Guidelines
Should contain at least 1 Capital letter,
Should contain at least 1 Symbol,
Should contain at least 1 numeric number,
Should have at least 8 characters, more is better,
Step #3 – Security Question Guideline
Use unique questions and answers that only you would know,
Make sure the answer is not able to be googled or found using another search engine,
Make sure that your account information is not shown anywhere online,
Step #4 – Back Up Measures
Connect the main account to the recovery account,
Back up all email and data to the recovery account,
Make sure the recovery account password is different from the main account,
Create a different set of unique questions for your recovery account,
Make sure this backup account is not shown anywhere on the internet publicly.
Make sure this backup account has no name relevancy to your main account,
Step #5 – Mobile Phone Connection
Connect your main account to the smartphone.
Verify with your mail provider that smartphone access is allowed.
Use the smartphone to check your mail often.
Consider using a two-step authorization if possible.
Step #6 – Preventing Security Breaches
Create a way to get to your password and account information and your security system, preferably separately and safely.
Log into your account regularly to see if there has been any activity that was not yours.
Check your log-in history (IP and location logged in from) often to make sure no one else has compromised your mail.
Back up all important email and any data that you cannot afford to lose.
Set settings to private as possible.
Step #7 – Social Platforms
Set all information to private for your accounts.
Alternatively, on some platforms, set for Do Not Share.
Make sure that your account passwords for the social accounts are unique (do not have the same password for all of them).
If possible, also enable two-step authorization for making any changes to your accounts.
Back up all important information from these accounts as well to a recovery site.
Step #8 – What To Do If You Think Your Account Has Been Compromised
Preamble: Because you have taken the steps above, you are ready should you suspect a breach has occurred and you have a plan to act...
Here is what to do…
Remain calm, getting freaked out will not help.
Check to see if your account really has been compromised.
See if you have had other accounts also compromised.
If you find either of the above situations is true the next steps are as follows:
Call your financial institutions and any other important entity where there may have been foul play from outsiders to inform them and have them protect you from further damages.
Get to a computer and internet that has a secure connection to the internet.
Check your recovery account to make sure it is safe and has not been compromised.
Attempt to log-in to your main account and change the password.
Once you are logged in successfully, change that password once again, annotate the new password and then add new unique questions and answers and store everything in a safe place.
Repeat this process for all compromised accounts.
Create a new secondary recovery account for each of the compromised accounts.
Stay calm as you go through these steps, heaven knows it will be a real pain…Be happy that you have taken all the steps mentioned prior to the compromise, so many have not!
Once everything is back to normal, keep on checking regularly to make sure that nothing further has happened that would damage you…
I invite you to print this off and use it as a start for a gameplan on how to protect yourself against hackers breaking into your email and other important accounts.
OK, this is just a rough outline of some of the things you need to be concerned about. If you would like to get more information, please read on…

CONCLUSION
Today we discussed the danger you are in daily of having your email account hacked and used for nefarious purposes. It happens all the time, even to the biggest sites on the internet.
In fact, it is events that have taken place at these big sites that brought the subject to the fore and made all of us more aware of just how vulnerable we are to this…
The training contained in the tutorial, along with the additional at cost training I am offering will help you review where you are with security and what you need to do.
The training will allow you to protect yourself and prevent you from adding to the long list of the people that have been victims of hackers and paid the price…
This is not rocket science or too hard to do. It is more a matter of fixing the problems you identify as you go through the training, then setting up a scheduled regular review of your accounts to make sure that all possible protective measures are in place and effective.
I urge you to take action now and do that security review and make all the needed changes immediately. Once you have been hacked it is too late and any money you lose may or may not be recoverable…

Great article, wish I had read this many years ago. I used to set all my passwords the same for all my email accounts. One got hacked and it was a chain reaction that took months to straighten up. Good thing none were attached to any financial stuff. Was still a nightmare. Loved the tips on backing up, need to do that. This is so related to making money online. We belong to so many things it is extremely important to protect ourselves. Thanks agian
Hi Bob,
Thanks for your positive comments on the tutorial, and I am right with you on the password thing. Security was never much of a concern as a civilian after being in the military for many years. I thought there was not much of a need…
The hacking into the major companies databases changed all the for me. When I saw that the hackers were going after these guys, I knew it was time to change the way I looked at security of my own data. Most people wait until they get hacked to take action, and of course then it is too late…
I do appreciate you sharing your own experiences with security issues and it does bring it right to where all of us need to be, but where most are not – having a plan in place and knowing what you will do if there are some compromises…
Cheers!
Dave
My email security sure means a whole lot to me. I’m receiving hundreds of emails daily and while most of them are not personal, I wouldn’t like anyone else to be reading them.
Also, someone with a bad intention could just delete emails with the sole purpose of me not reading them.
That’s why I consider my email should be as protected as it can be. Great guide, Dave
One question tho, why should my birthday be innacurate?
Hi Aless,
I think everyone would agree with you on the impact our emails and accounts have on our lives, both personally and professionally. Who wants to expose themselves needlessly to the many hackers out there that seek to gain from the data to include financial in some cases that we may have within our emails…
On the birthday tip, it is just another way to throw people off from having more information that they can use to gain access to your protected information. I have done this on several of my accounts, but not all. As with the recovery account you create, the less association with who you really are the better…
Thanks for the positive comments as well Aless and please feel free to stop by anytime!
Cheers!
