Here we are, on day ten of our lighter-side posts already! It seems like I just started with these, and I am having some fun…The popular related YouTube videos have been fun to review and select…

Plus I am finding it easier to come up with short lessons we can all learn from using them for these posts. They do not take long to go through and offer a lot of sage teaching opportunities for online marketers!

Today I want to briefly cover the subject of communication…We have to be able to get our message clearly and effectively out to our website visitors, to our prospects, and to our subscribers.

Our business counts on this skill…Being able to communicate clearly and effectively is a must!

Yes, I see it every day that communication and messages get crossed up…What we thought we were getting across to people is totally different from what they hear, read, or see from their end.

When this happens it costs, time, money, and effort…Since most of us are doing this online marketing on a shoe-string budget, it is likely that we can ill-afford to waste any of these things in our workday…

Bottom line is that if there is no congruence in your communication, or if it is not clear to the receivers what it is that you are intending to communicate, you will be losing sales, opportunities , and profits.

WHY WE WORRY ABOUT COMMUNICATION

As I mentioned in the introduction, really it is important to make sure that what you think you are saying is what others are hearing. This is not only important for your professional life, but also in every aspect of your life…

Think about personal relationships…Wife or husband, girlfriend or boyfriend, children, neighbors, work colleagues, the list can go on and on…If the messages you send are garbled or easily misunderstood, havoc can reign!

Professionally, it is no different. If you cannot write content, or create effective videos, or prepare copy that sells for your sales pages, you very likely will have little success with online marketing…

This is just fact…

Before we dig  deeper, let’s have a look at the lighter side of this point…Good examples of this can be found in a viral video from YouTube that has over 66 million views over the past few years…

Now, of course, this is just a short tongue in cheek cut-up of some NFL video film that has been doctored…But in real life, this happens…

What was said is not what we heard. What was intended, was not communicated clearly. As I mentioned, this can have major and adverse repercussions (a bad thing) in many areas of our life!

Really the lesson for us is to look at ways to communicate more clearly and effectively as online marketers. As we go through them, it makes sense to evaluate what you are doing now…

If some changes are in order based on these few tips, decide on what, how, and when you will make the changes…Then get busy and make them!

Here are some suggested areas to review in your professional life. I will stick to that side of communication today, as this website is chiefly covering the professional tools, tips, and etc.  you need to have success making money online with your own business…

STEPS TO CLEAR & EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Here are some areas that bear review on your side when it comes to your online marketing business.

I suggest reading through each category below and then do an assessment of your own current condition or “the state of affairs” meaning where are you now when it comes to each of the areas…

(1) Business Communication.

This general area includes all the various interactions that you may have while conducting business. It could be employees, virtual assistants, fellow marketers, or your prospects.

Areas of Concern:

(a) Getting your content communicated quickly and clearly…

(b) Influencing people within and outside the business to take actions you need them to take…

(c) Ensuring an effective two-way communication system is established and working…

(d) Having a quality control program in place to make sure all communication systems are functioning…

Possible Solutions:

(1) Do an assessment of your business communications in place right now.

(2) Make sure that you have checks and balances in place to minimize lapses.

(3) Check that your training and guidance documentation is current and in accordance with your business intent (congruency).

(2) Content Communication.

This is such a big area that drills down from the general communication skills that we must practice as online marketers that it bears having its own special category. This can include posts such as this, videos we create, sales pages and landing pages, websites, etc.

Areas Of Concern:

(a) Written content such as blogs, reports, emails, are clearly written and congruent with the overall intent of the business…

(b) Visual content is succinct and clearly states and shows the same congruent message, and clearly defines what is being offered/explained/expanded on, etc.

(c) For audible or audio/visual situations such as conferences, webinars, video training, making sure the message is congruent and clear…

(d) Making sure that sales pages and funnels match what the offers are, that the message communicated matches what is being offered, and done so effectively and clearly…

Possible Solutions…

(1) Establish guidelines for all content that is shared with the public.

(2) Create some checks for each type of media that your business uses that must be used prior to any content being released.

(3) Provide regular and free training on the media types the business handles to employees. if it is just you, take ongoing educational courses to stay current in what is working today…

(3) Social Media Communication.

Because this has grown exponentially over the past years, this also is an area that deserves special mention and expansion on the skills we need to communicate clearly.

Areas of Concern:

(a) Clear message to viewers or followers of who the business is, what they do, what they offer, and who to talk to…The platform page designs should send one message across all platforms…

(b) A planned schedule of content posts that are congruent with the overall intent of your online marketing business…This may include paid or unpaid content…

(c) An active reputation management program so that your business can clearly, effectively, and quickly respond to any adverse incidents that will harm your online marketing business.

(d) Communications must present one single “face” to site visitors or followers. Congruent messages across multi-platforms help minimize unplanned “accidents.”

Possible Solutions…

(1) Assign employees to a platform and have each assignee meet regularly with other platform managers. If it is just you or a few employees, regularly meet to discuss future plans and campaigns etc.

(2) Have a check and balance system in place for all platforms, in that someone not actually managing the platform will be offering advice and providing guidance.

(3) Plan well ahead of time for all the platforms and the organic and paid campaigns each will run, make sure that they do not conflict and that they are congruent with the overall intent of the business.

CONCLUSION

Today in our lighter side post (Day Ten) we looked at communication. This is a key skill that we have to possess in order that our business prospects understand what it is that we are offering.

If you are not clearly and effectively getting your message across to them, you are losing sales and likely subscribers too. This can lead to stress, frustration, and a loss of motivation.

After looking at the areas where clear and effective communication is important in your online marketing business, we then offered some advice on what to look for and steps to take to improve in each area.
