INTRODUCTION
Table of Contents
In this latest edition of my Lighter Side posts, I look at lead magnets. You may be wondering what these are if you are not into online marketing, lead lists, email marketing, etc.
If this is the case, no worries! Today you will learn what these are, why and how to use them, and finally, be able to look at my latest lead magnet…
They can help your online marketing program in a number of ways, and are worth understanding and using on a regular basis as a part of your overall strategy…
Remember that it is an adage that every lead you get results in an average of $1 a month, or $12 a year in sales for you. Constantly adding new leads is a way of breathing life into your online marketing program…
How do you get these leads? Through giving away something valuable for free (for their name and email address)…
Here is an example of one of my lead magnets:
You can have a look at what it looks like from the inside right here!
OK, Now you know what one looks like, now let’s drill down and learn more what these are all about!
Let’s get started!
WHAT ARE LEAD MAGNETS
A “Lead Magnet” is content, a tool, or a service that you give to a website or page visitor in exchange for their contact information. It is that simple…
The trick or key is to design a lead magnet that viewers will consider to be valuable and one that the viewers would be willing to pay for, except you are offering it at no cost…
It could be a report, an ebook, a WordPress plugin, a tool that they can use for their own online programs. or it could be a service or membership for free…
It could be a funny video that captivates the viewer and causes them to take action (whatever your call to action may be)…Videos are very effective if done professionally…
Here is an example of just such a lead magnet…
[videoframes src=”” skin=”34″ controls=”1″ headline_text=”A Twitter Pinned Lead Magnet… : )” headline_color=”#000000″ headline_size=”22″]
How you present your lead magnet is also important. You could do a separate web page marketing the lead magnet (known as a squeeze page or landing page or opt in web page), you could add links to the lead magnet within an article or post, or via a banner, etc.
Using this site as an example, you will see various free offers – one for a monthly magazine, one for an eBook, a free daily newsletter, etc. As the video mentions, a video can be enough to get them to your website and looking at your content and offers…
With each of these examples, the main intent is to pique the interests of the site visitors and compel them to take action…Adding one clear call to action can get them to your page/offer/lead magnet.
That traffic can be driven by Google searches (organic) or using paid ads (paid traffic) on a social platform such as Facebook…In both cases, this is better than general traffic…
The reason this is the case is that they have already indicated an interest by clicking through to your lead magnet. Having traffic that wants what you have means more subscribers and more conversions…
Even the traffic that does not take action to provide you their contact information is useful. Since they did indicate an interest, using tracking codes you can retarget them again using social platforms such as Facebook…
Remember it often takes more contacts with a prospect to get a conversion (or in this case a subscription)…The rule of thumb in the online marketing industry is that 5-7 interactions are needed before a person will buy something from you…
WHY USE LEAD MAGNETS
As I stated in the introduction, lead magnets can help your online marketing business immensely. Here are just a few things they do for you:
(1) They will provide you a steady source of new leads that you can send content to and build a relationship with.
(2) They will help build your authority within the niche that you may be targeting (they work with virtually ANY niche!).
(3) They help build your reputation. When you give away something that has high value for a subscription and it is something that prospects can use, this helps!
(4) They help build your name and brand. Once people within the niche realize that you are helping their efforts the word will get out, and over time, you will become more and more well known and thought of…
(5) They can help you build a solid online marketing program base from which you can then flesh out with more good content, and sales of products that you review and recommend.
There are more reasons, but I think you get the point…
I have some additional training on lead magnets that may be of interest to you here:
==> LEAD MAGNETS <===
and here…
==> 10 Things About Lead Magnets <==
and from Wealthy Affiliate, some excellent training by an Ambassador is helpful as well…
==> LEAD GENERATION <==
All of these training posts will guide you through creating a lead magnet and also show you how to set up the funnel, etc.
Now it is time to show you MY latest lead magnet (I create these periodically so there is fresh material for site visitors)…I will have to create a page of all of them so they can be easily viewed in one place…
This way prospects can select the magnet that is most interest and then they can secure the resource that is of the most interest…I also plan on allowing a mass download at some point, likely through the membership site that I am currently building…
MY LATEST LEAD MAGNET
Below you see an image of the latest lead magnet that I have put together for site visitors. This particular lead magnet is an ebook on Snapchat…
This is a different lead magnet than what I added in the introduction, but it will give you even more of an idea exactly what these are and how they can look…
Snapchat is a social platform that can be used by marketers, but it is not easy to understand how for many people (myself included when I first started looking into it!).
This book provides training, tools, and tips on how to start using the platform and once you are familiar with the social site, plan for incorporating it into your online marketing program…
Note the design of the cover is quite catchy, the content is something that people coming here will want to learn about, and it is FREE!
I am going one better than this…I am allowing potential subscribers peruse the first 6 pages of the training so they can verify it will be useful…
This is another good way to show before you sell…Letting people see what they are getting will often be the final push to get the subscriber, you have addressed any objection that they may have had…
Please see this directly below…
Here is a preview of this training:
If you want to download the book, all I need is your name and email, and immediately, right from this page, you can access the training!
By showing what they are getting and making it super easy to download this lead magnet, I increase the numbers of people that will take action…
What do I get for this?
I have the opportunity to send more valuable information to the subscriber, prove that I am a reputable person to deal with, and once in a while I can send promotions that make sense for that person…
It truly is a win-win situation that you are offering the prospective subscriber…They get the free content, will get more free content via emails, and eventually will have the chance to buy programs, etc. that will help them…
CONCLUSION
So today in our lighter side post, we looked at lead magnets…We found out what they are, why they can be useful for an online marketer, and then provided a few examples for you…
Thinking out of the box will be helpful when you create your lead magnets, and also how you present them to your readers, visitors, and prospects are all important factors to consider…
I referred you to another training tutorial I have on the website in our Free Traffic Series (10 posts with ideas) and lastly added in my own latest lead magnet…
The tutorial today is not a long read, but it does have a lot of valuable information that you can use for yourself. The training applies to any niche…
Now it is for you to drill down and dig deep….Come up with some good ideas on the content, tools, tips, service, or product that would be useful for your niche members…
Put it together in a professional manner, package it using an appropriate web page, make sure that the text and product are congruent with your overall strategy, and publish it!
Have fun and let me know below in the comment section how you come out…I would love to have some other examples to discuss as you plan and create your own effective lead magnets!

Enjoy!
Hi there Dave! I just wanted to say thank you for this interesting and useful article. I know that lead magnets are so important within an online business for building that all important email list, but it’s just something that I haven’t got around to yet.
I have been building a website for several months now and just haven’t got the sage of giving away free reports and so on. After reading your article here it has reminded me that I need to get this into place.
Do you recommend creating your own lead magnets or is there somewhere online that is a good resource for buying this sort of thing? Building a site is very time consuming and I could really do without having to write an ebook from scratch.
Any advice would be great! Thank you.
Hey Andrew!
Thanks mate, I do appreciate the positive thoughts and your time to add them here…I also understand what you mean by getting around to this aspect of online marketing…There is just so much to learn, and it takes time…
To answer your question, I use a combination of resources…
(1) One of the tools I secured for myself is called Commission Gorilla, and part of this tool are bonuses that you can plug in quickly to make a bonus page for promotions (this is another great incentive you can add to get increased sales)…You can read about that tool here: ==> Commission Gorilla Review
(2) A second place that I use is called automated list profits, where I can get 2 lead magnets a month that I then edit and make unique for my use. You can find that here ==> Automated List Profits < == (3) Another source I use is called Buzzinar, and you can learn more about that here ==> Buzzinar Review < == Lastly, I have another tutorial here that can help you more...Click on the link to check it out ==> 10 things about Lead Magnets < == Best of luck! Cheers! Dave : )
Lead magnets is a great idea. I am thinking of building a list again. Its been a few years since I used the old one and it doesn’t really pertain to what I’m doing now. How do you find the free stuff to give away? Are you creating that yourself? I had never hears the term Lead Magnets. Did you coin that yourself?
Hi Dennis,
Yes I really thought Lead Magnets were a great idea too when I got started with online marketing…It was hard to grasp how to put it all together…The tutorials that you find here on the site (links are in the comment below) are the result of my own experiences to now…
Regarding the term Lead magnets, it is another term (so many I have had to learn hehe) that I had heard thrown around in my research so I cannot take credit for the phrase, but of course I like the concept…Much as I like adding bonuses yto my promotions to get increased sales…
You can find these using the links I have added in the comment below or through other places that offer packages. These save you time and some even have all the landing pages etc. so it is a matter of an hour or so of work to get them edited and published…
Best of luck and thanks for stopping by!
Cheers!
Dave : )
Thanks Dave for yet another useful tutorial…This one on Lead Magnets has tons of information we can all use as internet marketers!
How long does it take you to put these together? It seems like a lot of pieces to the offer have to be considered when you plan these things!
Do you offer these for others to use for their own programs? That might be a good source of some passive income for you hehe…You seem to have a way with words (joking!)!
Bye for now!
Rea
Hi Rea,
Good to see you here, it has been awhile…You are more than welcome for the post, you know that anything I can do to help I am in and will do the best I can…
The more you do something, the easier it becomes to do it, at least that has been my experience. At first putting all the parts together was a bit cumbersome and I was not sure if what I was doing worked or not…
As you do more and refine the process, it really does not take that much time these days…I can knock out 2-3 a month and always have fresh lead magnets that contain content that readers can actually use in their own online marketing programs…
Right now I am not at the stage where I have the time to offer packages to others, but that is a great idea. I am putting together a membership site that will go live very soon, and one section likely will be a leads magnet section. That would be the logical place to add these to I think…
Thanks again or stopping by, and I wish you a great day and rest of week, wherever you may be this week!
Cheers!

Hey Davey,
I absolutely loved reading this post. I knew that lead magnets are important but I really do not know how to go about it [that was until I read this post]
The couple of lead magnets that you’ve shared here look really cool. The cover images are really captivation. I think I am going to spend some more time on coming up with an effective lead magnet for my website.
Hi Josh,
I am really glad that you found the content here on lead magnets useful! This is a real important aspect of getting new leads and can work when starting out or later as you have a larger list that you are working with…
If you read through some of the link posts you should have a very good idea of how to proceed…Let us know if you have some problems, and also what kind of successes you have as you go along!
Lastly, if you have any question about any part of the process, just drop them here in the comment section and we will get back to you…My email is dave@davesweney.com if you want to drop a line to me personally…
Oh yes, I also use Skype (david sweney, Am Erlenbach 5a, Germany) if you need to do a face to face (via video call)…Best of luck to you M8!
Cheers!
Dave : )
Awesome!!!
Thanks a lot, Dave, I have decided to work on a content upgrade lead magnet. I am going to let you know how that works out for me.
Thank you so much for sharing your email address and skype id with. It demonstrates you really value and care about your visitors.
Hi Josh,
No problem at all M8….Thanks for coming back and adding in more feedback…Lead magnets are not that hard to put together…Think of some particular skill you have where other people would be happy to obtain, learn about, and use for themselves, or maybe a tool that you use that helps you get things done faster or easier…
Bottom line…If there is anything I can do for you, let me know…We are all on this journey together, and the more we work together to all progress the better it is…It is like sharing a piece of pie, except in this case, the more pieces of pie you share, the bigger the pie gets! Everyone wins…I like that!
Cheers!

Thanks dave, your teaching on lead magnet is very key to the success on any website. Yes it is true an interaction with visitors for about 7 times is required for them to make a purchase from you and having them on your mailing list at the initial stage is very crucial in the purchase life-cycle. Thank you for sharing.
All the best
Hi Bonto,
Thanks for stopping by and it sounds like you are in the know on lead magnets. They are not that hard to create and useful for you and the recipient if set up properly…
On the 7 times of contact, this is a number I have heard again and again. Iin my case from my purchases over time, I can vouch that this figure is about right.
Any contact counts, such as if your prospect is reading a post, perhaps downloads one or more of your lead magnets or infographics, or maybe from different platforms (i.e. web post, Facebook ad, Twiiter, etc.)…
Cheers!

Great post! Lead magnets are a great tool. In your opinion, what do you find the best lead magnet is? I’ve recently heard that something other than an ebook is better. Something like a list or guide or something short. Do you agree?
I’m currently using an eBook that I’m in the middle or writing as my lead magnet. When a reader subscribes, the get the first part and then the next two and so on. It’s only 8 parts of between 10 to 15 pages. Does it sound OK to you, doing it this way?
Thanks,
Liz
Hi Liz,
Great to see you here! Regarding which kind of lead magnet is best, I would have to say a tool, a free product such as a graphics package, or maybe a useful WP plugin might be better than an eBook or report.
The eBook and report magnets do work, don’t get me wrong…I think it depends on who you are focusing on and the subject you are covering that determine the best fitting lead magnet…
What you are doing sounds great to me, the drip-feed aspect means that you can offer the portion they look at without any subscription, and for a name and email they can get the rest of your content.
Best of luck and let us know how much success you have with this method…We can all learn from one another, and this uniqe take might just be the ticket!
Cheers!

Dave,
Thanks for this post. There is a ton of useful information here. The concept of giving someone something of value for free to get a lead and instill their trust in you is great.
As I am new at website building, I think having a Lead Magnet on my posts would be very helpful. I realized after reading your post that it would be a good way to build up my email list, and draw people to my offers. I have yet to do it though.
I think I will take your advice and go to your Commission Gorilla Review and the other links listed in your reply to Andrew above and see what I can use as a Magnet for Leads myself. Let’s face it. Without leads, you aren’t going to have much of a business. Thanks again for the valuable info!
Best regards,
Scott
Hi Scott,
Thanks for stopping by and also for the positive words…
I hope that some of the places I have mentioned will help you out…The point with using such sources is to cut down the production time to get the magnet and accompanying pages, autoresponder campaign, etc. in place and operational…
As you mention, especially when starting out and learning all there is to know, plus getting the website and other social platforms in place, adding lead magnets to your “to do” list can seem overwhelming. Using some of the tools out there will save you stress and time…
No traffic is free, there is some work on the front end with organic traffic, whereas if you buy traffic, you will have immediately interested people looking at what you have to offer.
The key is that to keep your costs down and have something valuable for subscribers, by you constantly creating and publishing new material for organic traffic, the paid traffic will notice…
You will get to be known as an authority in the niche much quicker. You do not have to know it all, but as you do these led magnets, you will learn more and more, and the benefits will be there to reap long term…
Cheers and best of luck. Let us know how things go for here!
